Lesson 1

Right now we are sitting in the clearing at the end of our first bush walk. On our walk you may have noticed a sound we don’t often hear in our classroom… No, it’s not silence! ðŸĪŠ 😝 It’s a different sound… the sounds of gossping birds, the shimmering of the wind, rustling leaves…

Part One: Make a MIndmup (15m)

  1. Open up the Mindmup application on your ipad.
  2. Make a new Mindmup.
  3. Name the central bubble and using the red squared icon make an arm called Sounds.
  4. You have 5 more minutes of listening, discussing and typing to identify as many details as possible of sounds you can hear.
Mindmup Application

Up next: explore the clearing and identify the following to expand your Mindmup. (10m minutes)

  1. What you can see, feel, smell, hear?
  2. What is special and unique about this place?
  3. Why is this place important to people? Why are people important to it?
  4. What messages do you want the Australian government to know about this place?

Part two: image and sound (10m)

Huawei 360 Camera Extension

When your Mindmup is full of ideas show it to your teacher. They will lend your group the Huawei 360 camera extension. Attach the extension to your ipad and open the app. Take a photo and save in panoramic virtual reality mode. Name your photo by your first names; eg Ellie_Kitty. Then return the camera to your teacher.

NEXT: Open the Voice Recorder app on your ipad. Any sound you record save as a description of the sound. Your teacher will save everyone’s sounds onto a shared Google Folder so that everyone will have access to the different sounds when editing on Garage Band.

part three: begin drafting your speech using the following format (20m)

  1. Welcome the listener on the tour of the Blue Mountains National Park and offer an Acknowledgement or Welcome to Country.*
  2. Describe the scene using emotive language; what does it look like, sound like, feel like?
  3. Persuade them to recognize the significance, beauty and meaning of an environment such as the Blue Mountains National Park existing by letting them know what they will regret if the park is cut down.
  4. Finish with a call to action: tell the listener what you want them to think, feel or do.
  5. Your speech should be no longer than ONE PAGE

IMPORTANT: Your partner is there to brainstorm and bounce ideas off each other. You can work with your partner but you must submit your own unique persuasive speech.

Our next lesson will be later this week. You will have time between now and then to work on your speech.

Blue Mountains National Park

Time is up! We have spent 45 minutes at the clearing and will now bush walk back to the bus. I recommend you spend this time walking to brainstorm and discuss ideas with your partner about your persuasive speech. Good luck!
